Wow Mike, what a great bit of ‘family’ trivia!

I checked out the WikiPedia article during research for an earlier episode, but revisited it after seeing your comment. It’s like taking a walk down the ‘memory lane’ of my (pre)teen years. Man, TV was much simpler then. I loved so many of those shows.

I was a big fan of the original Battlestar Galactica. Although I didn’t jump on the bandwagon when the Sci-Fi channel launched the newly “re-imagined” edition, I started watching recently on DVD. I enjoyed what I have seen so far, and am able to still draw many parallels between the theology portrayed in the show, and our Mormon beliefs.

The Beliefnet article you cite is great. I enjoyed reading the producer’s own insight into the theology of the humans and the Cylons.

Hey guys, my father in law is actually Glen Larson the guy who created the original battlestar so I know what you are talking about. Unfortunately he is not active in the church anymore but he did base that show off of some mormon beliefs.

The new show Producers do not contact Glen nor do they care to base anything off of mormon theology anymore…so I don’t think the Joseph Smith and Nephi theories will hold up

I recall our ward doing something similar a few years back. Each week in opening exercises, 2 or 3 brothers would be challenged to give a Book of Mormon away and those challenged the week before would give reports. I don’t recall how it turned out. I mean, we haven’t had to create a new stake in our ward boundary yet

Our ward is trying something new for us right now – each week the HP Group and Elders Quorum choose one brother to place a Book of Mormon and report the following Sunday on the results. Two referrals in two weeks, and more in the works.

We’re also finding that inviting youth to activity night is still a great missionary tool. We have several youth under 18 that are just waiting for parental permission to be baptized.

I was fortunate enough to be in your audience on the invite a friend to Church sacrament meeting because my nephew was being blessed. I thought it was a pleasant and worthwhile idea and very timely too seeing that my non-member relatives were there. (Full Discloser: it was Sean’s nephew as well, in other words we’re related)

Seeing how I’m in the Washington DC area, any DC native has an easy way of approaching a Mormon and likewise for a member to approach someone and its solely based on the Washington, DC temple. Because of the prominent perch next to the DC Beltway traffic reports on the radio will reference the Mormon Temple because you can’t miss it. The area has the second worst traffic in the nation so it happens constantly. The Portland Temple is also at a major intersection, albeit more hidden by trees, and the San Diego Temple is just as imposing as the DC Temple. I would advise members that the House of the Lord is a fine way to introduce what we value and believe, many temples are in great locations to do just that. I haven’t been here a year and there have been plenty of opportunities to express my beliefs that start from others mentioning the temple. Even recently explaining the Angel Moroni while driving by the place.

When I was in school as an anthro major I wrote a paper comparing Mormon and Muslim origins. It is amazing how many similarities there are.

1. A prophet, through revelation reveals a new book of scripture.

2. Combining the old and new testament with the new book to solidify a core set of doctrine.

3. An emphasis on the prophet as the one who revealed lost truths.

4. A bonding of members based on persecution.

etc.
